A trip through the carbon cycle

On Friday, the students did a writing integration activity that allowed them to be a little bit wacky and creative. The assignment was to pretend they were a carbon atom traveling through the carbon cycle.

I have been reading their stories this weekend, and they are GREAT! My sixth graders have really entertained me this weekend with their creative minds! I hope to be able to post some of the papers soon!

Thanks, guys! Keep up the fantastic work!

New Year

We are off to a great start in 2009! For those of you who did not know, I moved from 3rd grade to 6th grade this year. I am very excited to be teaching Science!

I am learning as much as the students about the 6th grade Science curriculum! I attended AMSTI training over the summer, where I learned a lot of techniques and methods for making Science more meaningful with hands-on activities and labs. Unfortunately, we will not be getting our AMSTI kits until after Christmas for this year. After attending the training for the other 1/2 of the year next summer, I will be fully teaching AMSTI curriculum from then on. For this year, however, I am taking the methods and strategies that I learned in AMSTI and applying them (the best I can) to the first semester curriculum. I think it's going to be a great year!

Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions and/or concerns. We are working together to make our children responsible citizens!

Memories..........

I would like for you, my students, to leave this year remembering the many fun things we experienced throughout the year.

Your final "homework assignment" is this: post a comment to my blog, telling me your favorite memory of this year. Can't think of just one? Tell me something about one or two (or even three or four)! I can't wait to see who posts.

But first, I want to share mine:

It's so hard to think of just one thing, but I guess I would have to say it was The Talent Show. I was SO proud of my third graders! You all did such an amazing job! Many of you really "showed your stuff". It was fun to sing songs altogether. But the best thing was seeing some of you overcome your fears to put on a great performance! It was a LOT of hard work, but it all paid off in the end! You guys are the best!

Now, tell me your favorite memory. Don't forget to put your name.

Mother's Day Surprise

I hope everyone had a rewarding Mother's Day! We worked hard on our flower vases and pens. I hope all of our mothers enjoy using them!

I was pruning my rose bush when I found a great surprise! Can you see what it is? It was very unexpected!

Read-in

On Thursday after we finished all of our testing, we decided to have a Read-in (kind of like a lock-in, but with books!) I invited some guest readers to our room to read to the class, and we all gathered around to hear the interesting stories! We then pulled up the comfortable chairs, bean bag, and the floor to read our own books and share with our friends!

Mrs. Edwards, our collaborative teacher, began our festivities by reading, Walter, the Farting Dog. I followed that with the book, I'm a Booger, Treat Me with Respect. After that, we went to a comfortable spot in the room to share our books with our friends.

Lastly, our ELL teacher, Mrs. Blakeney, read a story about Venezuela. It was neat to hear her speaking fluent Spanish as she told us about some of the customs of Venezuela!

Thanks to those of you who supported us in our effort to become great readers!

Time to shine........

3rd grade students are ready for testing in their sunglasses. Each day after standardized testing and practice is over, the students are treated to a little bit of fun in the afternoon. Today, we wore sunglasses to show that we were going to "Shine through the SAT's" while we went outside and threw frisbees to "soar through the SAT's". It's just our little way of motivating our students.

I'm Not Getting Up Today........

Maybe I should have stayed at home, but........

Where else can you come to work in your PJ's and rollers (and still have a job the next day)?

What are the chances?????

We had a great time with Math on Friday. We participated in math stations with activities based on probability.
We used number cubes to find the most/least likely outcomes and to find out whose "horse" wonn the race.....
We determined the probability of winning/losing at heads v. tails.....
We found the probability of winning/losing at Rock/Paper/Scissors.....
Math is GREAT fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Day For Up

It was a "Great Day for Up" in room 215 today! We had several children dressed "to the nines" as they walked through our hallways today!

It's great fun to celebrate Dr. Seuss and all he has done for reading.....even if you're celebrating in front of a class of 3rd graders wearing a formal gown and silver high heels!

Fair vs. Unfair

Yesterday we worked on determining fair/unfair, probability and chances. With questions like, "Is it certain or impossible that we will have Math today?" and "Is it certain or impossible that a pink elephant will fall from the sky?" we learned about chances.

What are the chances that someone out there had as much fun in math class as we did yesterday? I think it would be "unlikely"!

Finally catching up

I will soon (tomorrow) be catching up in math to the point where I can do some of the awesome activities Brandy has been doing. We will be working on Probability soon. My students are really missing Math centers. Maybe tomorrow.........

Welcome to my very first attempt at a blog! I am not sure what it's going to look like to all of you out there, but from here, I'm pretty proud of myself!
